36 holes par 7 (6075/6065 yards)
Translating to "Beautiful Mountain" in Indonesian, Gunung Geulis Country Club is a massive 450-hectare, 36-hole golf resort perched 450 meters above sea level in the Bogor hills. Located about 50 kilometers from central Jakarta and 45 minutes off the Jagorawi Highway, the resort offers crisp mountain air and sweeping panoramic views, making it a premier escape from the city. Both 18-hole courses on the property were designed by the world-renowned Australian architecture firm Thomson, Wolveridge, and Perret.
Opened in 1992 and measuring 6,075 meters, the West Course demands disciplined course management and precise club selection over sheer power.
Design & Hazards: Every hole offers a unique layout punctuated by distinctively crafted pot bunkers, sand traps, strategic doglegs, and water features that heavily test low handicappers.
The Opener: The course begins with a short par-4 featuring a dramatic 30-meter drop from the tee box to the fairway. A cautious hybrid or 3-wood off the tee is highly recommended to secure an easy opening par.
Opened in 1994 and playing to 6,065 meters, the East Course features highly rugged, hilly terrain that requires a golf cart. Though slightly shorter than the West Course, its tight, sloping fairways and dramatic hazards present a stiffer challenge, all set against a distinctive British links-style design.
The Front Nine (Valley Course): Characterized by heavily rolling fairways that follow the natural contours of the misty mountain slopes.
8th Hole (Par 5, 433 meters): Short but highly intimidating. A massive lake hugs the left side of a narrow fairway, forcing a tactical decision off the tee. Long hitters who find the fairway can attempt to reach the green in two, though the approach is a blind downhill shot heavily guarded by pot bunkers.
9th Hole (Par 3): A spectacular short hole forcing a long-iron or hybrid shot to a tiny target resting 50 meters below the tee box.
The Back Nine (Hill Course): Features steeper uphill and downhill climbs. While the fairways open up and become wider, they are significantly more undulated.
16th Hole (Par 3, 164 meters): Plays much longer than its scorecard distance due to a steep incline. The entrance to this elevated green is incredibly tight, flanked by penalizing bunkers on all sides.
Traveler Tip: While the golf experience is top-tier, the accompanying resort lodging is fairly basic and primarily caters to local weekenders from Jakarta. Out-of-town visitors looking for luxury may want to look at alternative accommodations nearby.
The Clubhouse: Designed by famous Australian architect Kym Hughes, the massive clubhouse is a welcoming landmark easily recognized by its iconic, circular blue roof. It comes equipped with comprehensive amenities to support a full day on the coordinates.
